February - Venice Carnival
Each year in February the city comes alive with many thousands of party-goers, wearing elaborate masks and costumes of the most spectacular colours and designs, attending glittering traditional masked balls, theatrical performances and exclusive private parties.
May - Festa della Sensa
Each May the city celebrates the day of the marriage between Venice and the sea, when the Doge would ride out in his ship, the "Bucintoro", and toss a ring of gold into the waters off the Lido.
May - Vogalonga
Each May, the Vogalonga rowing competition is a major event as the motorboats of the lagoon give way to a variety of rowing boats as they participate in this marathon race of 30km.
June-November - Venice Biennale
53rd International Art Exhibition
Making Worlds. 53rd edition of the number one contemporary Art event in Italy. The show combines two exhibition spaces (Palazzo delle Esposizioni at the Gardens and the Arsenale) assembling 90 artists from around the world with new works created in all art forms.
June - Punta della Dogana
Mapping the Studio: Artists from Francois Pinault Collection
A large exhibition marks the opening of a new museum dedicated to contemporary art at Punta della Dogana, a historic complex built in the 17th century now redesigned by architect Tadao Ando. Conceived as a single artistic journey continuing at Palazzo Grassi, the show offers some 300 works from Francois Pinault's art collection.
June - Vedova Foundation, Former Salt Warehouse
A new exhibition space for Venetian Art - pursued and created by Emilio and Annabianca Vedova Foundation as a container of works by the Venetian master. Painting, space, movement, energy in exhibition action conceived during meetings between Vedova and Renzo Piano.
June - Palazzo Fortuny: In-Finitum
Many are the artists who have tackled the subject of the infinite - many works are on view in this fascinating exhibition mounted in the elegant Venetian palazzo that once was the residence and atelier of Mariano Fortuny.
July 18th, 2009 - Redentore
The "Redentore" connect Venice, both emotionally and physically, with a bridge across the Giudecca Canal. This festivity began in the 16th century as a thanksgiving to God for his intervention to halt the plague, and is now celebrated with spectacular fireworks.
September - Venice Film Festival
2-12 September 2009 - Every year the International Film Festival also known as "Mostra del Cinema" takes over the Lido as the world's greatest stars descend on Venice.
September - Historical Regatta
On September 6th, 2009 - The most spectacular rowing event of the year is held on the first Sunday in September, with costumes parade and rowing races.
October - Venice Marathon
On 25th October is the 24th edition of the Venice Marathon, a wonderful spectacle as competitors race through the narrow streets of Venice.
